Tasting Notes

The Franc Arman Teran Barrique 2009 (Vrhunsko: Supreme Quality) is an exceptional vintage.

The 2008 vintage was used in the Master Class at the annual Vina Croatia 2012 event at Delfina London on 6 September 2012 and presented by wine celebrity Joe Wadsack. The event project manager and author of ‘Wines of Croatia – Unique and Exciting’, Saša Špiranec, declared the wine as the "best Teran to have come out of Istria". This is an incredible wine delivering huge pleasure and a taste experience.

Produced from only the finest grapes based on controlled cluster selectivity methods, this wine is aged for twelve months in oak "barrique" barrels (215 litres). It has a characteristic ruby-red colour and noble, wild berry aroma tinged with vanilla. The taste is full-bodied, robust and dry. The aging in the small oak barrique barrels give the wine some typical Rioja oak notes, but the Teran grape gives this wine much more character.

Ideal for partnering with meat and game, prosciutto, cheese and truffle dishes. Can also be enjoyed on its own.

"Franc Arman's Teran Barrique wines are always something special. The 2009 hits the spot, just as well, with its welcoming aroma of red berry fruit that persists on the nose even after breathing. At first sip on opening there is a warm embrace, like a hug from your spouse in cashmere, which opens to layers of silky softness with plummeting depths of flavour and oak roundness in the mouth. Welcome home...

Surprisingly, to the uninitiated, this wine goes excellently with spicy food where you need a wine to have sufficient strength of character to overcome the heat and spicy flavours of chilli and Far Eastern spices and cool the tongue and mouth. Try with Beef Rendang or a medium to hot Indian curry. Serve in large Burgundy red wine glasses to enjoy fully."

Details

Franc Arman is well known for his excellent Teran, a quintisential dry red wine from Istria, made from indiginous grapes. The wine bottle ages beautifully.
The Teran vines grow in ‘rust’ red terra rossa soil over a layer of limestone rock on a slightly elevated plain at 250m above sea level on the south side of the Mirna Valley. This has a distinct bearing on the taste of this red wine.
The climate is ideal for producing wines with a full expression of fruit. Hot summers with rain throughout the year keep the landscape verdant even in the height of summer as there are frequent thunder storms There is rarely snow in the winter, which are generally mild to cold as the Adriatic Sea stabilises the climate of coastal regions.
